Thoughts on Tumblr vs Dreamwidth
Dec. 5th, 2018 11:16 amWhen I first discovered fandom, everything was on Livejournal (which is, of course, a lot like Dreamwidth). I wasn't happy about the move to Tumblr. All of a sudden instead of thoughtful comments there were just a bunch of pictures, and it was impossible to have a conversation. At least, that's how it felt to me. It really affected how I interacted with fandom. Instead of making my own posts I just ended up scrolling through my dash mindlessly and reblogging things occasionally. Sometimes I'd do little text posts about writing or real life stuff, but not very often.
I'm hoping that getting back to Dreamwidth will actually encourage me to do more than just lurk. I used to do episode reaction posts when I was in Supernatural fandom. (Of course, now I'm in MCU fandom where you have to wait months for new content, so reaction posts aren't as much of a thing.) But maybe I'll try doing more fic or art now, or talk about writing.
There are some things I'll miss about Tumblr. It was really easy and relaxing to just scroll through my dash and see beautiful art in my fandoms, and cute kitten pictures, and political stuff that I ought to be informed about. I'm not sure how that will change on Dreamwidth. A lot of the time I do tend to default to lurking. Here I am trying to write a post without overthinking it and editing myself so much that I never post it.
I'm not sure where most of fandom will end up settling. Maybe it'll be here, maybe it'll be Pillowfort or some other place. (I'm also on PIllowfort as livilend). I guess we'll see! For now, I'm going to make an effort to be here.
